2008 was the year I started my business, so that is what this look back is mainly about.
Kimbuktu was based on the virtuous woman who "perceives that her merchandise is good, and her candle goeth not out at night." from Proverbs 31. My candle definitely has not gone out much at night this year. Besides holding down a full time job, I have worked at my business most evenings and weekends. I've kept a notebook with goals, ideas for inventory and promotion, successes, and things I've learned along the way.
And I have learned a great deal. About time management, photography, sewing, promoting, YouTube, Flickr, Facebook, Yahoo, Blogging, sales tax, and business networking. I've made some 2-D friends through the internet; we have supported, encouraged, and even purchased from each other.
This site has hosted some wonderful artisans over the last twelve months. Besides enjoying their art, we have seen a glimpse of their lives. The "How To" section has given instruction on everything from making a box, to freestyle quilting. "Gallery" has been kept updated with some of the handmade items for sale in my shops. "52 Weeks" has chronicled projects mastered, as well as some that didn't turn out too well. And the "What's New" Blog has shared my journey from opening shop, to Thankful April, to Maple Syrup cookies, with lots of thoughts in between.
This first year of business has been stimulating, exciting, frustrating, and consuming. I have neglected my family and friends, haven't made the usual handmade gifts for them, or scrapbooked, and my home needs cleaning. I've probably spent more on materials (and certainly time), than I've earned.
I have no idea where it will go from here; but am glad to have finally acted on a lifelong dream of owning my own business. What I do know is that success will be by God's grace and assistance. And I am content to have Him at the helm.
So here's to a thankful end to 2008, and hoping for the best year yet for all of us in 2009.
